When you say "a lot of site traffic" do you mean traffic as in registered members reading and/or contributing or is it down to some other cause?

Both registered and non-registered. Non-registered generally always see the same content so I might be able to help by serving them cached content via Cloudflare's cache. I haven't tried that yet though.

I've regularly noticed at the bottom of the site's home-page are the names of members who have visited that day. Many have decidedly bizarre usernames and often their profiles look decidedly 'iffy'. Many don't look like genuine registrations and I do wonder if they cause issues with the operation of the website.

I suspect it's the action of a bot.

I would expect there's a way to require pre-authorisation of applications for membership. That might be easier than trying to delete the many, apparently spurious, bogus applications.

This website is able to be browsed by anyone and those wishing to make a posting could apply in the usual way. There would be just a short delay while their application is approved.
