Hi Podshell. I start out taking 5 mg of melatonin to get my body acclimated to shut down. I do take a prescribed sleep aid as well, but that's not popular with everyone as one does grow dependent on them to sleep.
But I think what helps me the most is I turn on a wave machine on the bed stand. It has the rolling and breaking sounds of ocean waves. It must work, at least for me, because if I forget to turn it on, I cannot get to sleep at all. Or if I do, it's short lived and I wake up knowing something is wrong, then I reach over and turn on the wave machine and it lulls me back to sleep. I got my wave machine from Bed Bath and Beyond, but I'm sure you can get them a lot of other places too including online. Makes a world of difference for me.

I have had periods of insomnia over the last several years. I thought that was it until I met a spiritual teacher who recommended that I replace my pillow. I did that and the insomnia stopped. I was able to sleep through the whole night. Now, if I start to wake up in the middle of the night and not be able to go back to sleep, I know it's time to replace my pillow. For me, it's once a year.
I also found that if I have anything on my mind before going to bed, it is best to write it down. Writing it down, takes it out of my head and I am able to sleep much better.
I am not suggesting that this solution will work for everyone, as I'm sure there are people who do suffer from insomnia. For others, it might work.
