I think this is like the Bodhisattva vow, to help others enlighten before we reach Buddha hood.

Correct.
At the end of the personal bodhisattva vows of Master Hua in the following link, are the four general bodhisattva vows that those who take refuge in Mahayana Buddhism also take.
