In Judaism, if a person could not support themselves, they could sell themselves to another Jew. In that case, itcould be a life saver.

The bible teaches to do ones best for their masters as well if they are a slave. It probably saved a lot of whippings and being killed as well. The bible teaches-Better to be a live dog than a dead lion. Ecclesiastes 9:4
Always do ones best for the honor of the true God whom one claims to serve, no matter the circumstances. It brings honor to his name if nothing else.

True God has only one task- improving human consciousness.

I had at least two ancestors that were indentured servants. I find it hard to believe they were whipped and killed. One of them was held in high respect.

In my area, people were selling slaves at least to 1871 even though slavery had been outlawed in 1865. For those souls sold as slaves, it meant they had a chance to not to starve to death.

..... sadly, I suspect some fully believe whipping and killing others is a part of Christianity. In my opinion, that is far from the truth.

We can look at any religion and with a little bit of effort, make it look like the worst religion on the planet. But then, some might come to realize why somebody might want to do something like that.

One thing is certain in these forums…..if one person says something is abhorrent someone else will rise to defend it…..we cannot even come to a consensus regarding slavery….now if all men were created equal when did that moment of equality occur ?

I think it is clearly not equal. Some are born poor, some rich, some healthy, some sickly, some with disabilities, some with none. Some get nurturing parents, some get abusive parents. No one is born equal. Some get born in war zones, others get born in safe places.

Who decides such things? God? Why is one born into slavery and others into wealth and power? Is it God who is putting souls in such unequal births and lives and why? Is it a roll of the dice or it is done due to differences in the souls God sees?

Jesus implied the poor have an easier time getting into heaven.

Matthew 19:24
New International Version
24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”
