Red, John, couldn't agree with you more.
And yes, Libraries have figured massively in my life and honestly I couldn't have lived without them.
Modern day they are crucial not for people loaning books so much as people needed to use the computers .
But still a crucial service to people that need to do an online course, or print documents that do not own a pc / laptop/ printer etc.
Libraries were a lifeline for me when my kids were growing up at school, because we had no mobiles, PC's or the internet, so any research they needed for homework had to be done at the library.
I took them once a week to choose books for leisure/ bedtime , but often we went to just research fof studies.
As for me growing up, when I started school my reading age was around 7 years. I was 4.
In spelling tests I always got 100% .
I didn't even have to "revise"...
I just scanned down the words to literally see what the were and I was good to go...
English, by far as was my best subject.
And books , by far, gave been my greatest joy.
I still find it hard to get my head round the fact that in our alphabet, just 26 little symbols can create so much as in writing.. It's amazing.
When I was young we had no charity shops etc to buy bargains , and also, where I lived in z small mining village there was no library.
Wd had to rely on the quarterly school jumble sale in the hope I could secure a few books or comics with my sixpence pocket money.
But my saving grace was the "mobile library" which parked up at the end of my street every other Monday tea time.
For me as a young child it was akin to going to Disney world.
It was magical.
And the way they would finger through all the thousands of tickets to find yours was beyond fascinating , and the icing on the cake was when they stamped your book on the insert to tell you when due back.
I was mesmerized !!!!!
