Introduction of a Japanese aphid to kill off Knotweed.
A natural predator on the Knotweed in Japan. Scientists have succeeded in "hardening" the aphid to survive British winters, the sap-sucking Aphalori Itadori bug is said to be no threat to native plants such as rhubarb.
What could possibly go wrong ?

For your sakes, I do hope it isn't the Asian ladybug, that is usually an orange vs the red color. Check out this report " ASIAN LADY BEETLE INFESTATION OF STRUCTURES" ... do a search if you are interested.

This worries me. When will humankind stop meddling with nature? I just hope that these foreign aphids will not destroy the food or habitat of our native aphids (like the grey squirrel did to the red squirrel). That could cause unforeseen outcomes further in the eco-chain. Hands off, modification scientists! No more meddling!
Yes, knotweed is invasive and does need to be controlled. But not in this way. Incidentally, some Japanese knotweed is actually farmed for its resveratrol (which has beneficial effects for longevity when extracted from the knotweed, according to recent research).

There is Japanese knotweed here. It is actually a fine plant, with not unattractive flowers, but it is a true force of nature, capable of forcing its way through concrete, and choking streams and rivers.
I can well understand the appeal of the exotic, but this story only serves to underline the danger of introducing alien fauna and flora.
